Zambia's Green Policies Aim to Promote Environmental Sustainability and Combat Climate Change, Says Dr. Mwanda Phiri.

Zambia has long been committed to promoting environmental sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. According to Dr. Mwanda Phiri, the country has been implementing green policies since independence in 1964, but the urgency of the issue has become more prominent in recent years due to climate change.

To achieve this goal, Zambia has adopted a number of green policies, including the National Policy on Environment, the National Climate Change Response Strategy, the National Policy on Climate Change, and the Seventh National Development Plan. These policies reflect the country's recognition of the importance of balancing economic development with environmental protection and collaborating with regional and international partners to address climate change.

The National Policy on Environment, which was adopted in 2007, provides a framework for integrating environmental concerns into development planning and decision-making. The policy recognizes the importance of environmental sustainability for long-term economic growth and development, as well as for the well-being of all Zambians.

The National Climate Change Response Strategy, adopted in 2010, outlines the vision, objectives, principles, and actions for addressing climate change adaptation and mitigation. It emphasizes the importance of building resilience in vulnerable communities, promoting sustainable land use and management practices, and encouraging the adoption of renewable energy technologies.

The National Policy on Climate Change, adopted in 2016, builds on the previous strategy and provides guidance for mainstreaming climate change into sectoral policies and programs. The policy recognizes the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable development through the adoption of low-carbon technologies.

Finally, the Seventh National Development Plan, adopted for the period 2017-2021, incorporates green growth as one of its pillars and identifies priority areas such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, forestry, water management, and waste management. The plan recognizes that these sectors have significant potential for contributing to economic growth and development while also promoting environmental sustainability.

While Zambia has made significant progress in adopting green policies, there are still challenges and gaps in implementing them effectively. These include a lack of funding, capacity, coordination, and monitoring. Therefore, the country needs to continue strengthening its institutional frameworks, mobilizing resources, enhancing public awareness and participation, and fostering innovation and technology transfer to fully achieve its green policy goals.

In conclusion, Zambia's green policies reflect the country's commitment to environmental sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. While there are still challenges and gaps to address, the country's continued commitment to strengthening its institutional frameworks and collaborating with regional and international partners bodes well for its future.
